Community & Patient Care

On May 21, 2005, the Stanford Department of Radiology celebrated one hundred years of making Radiology history. As we enter a new century, we are confident that the next 100 years will be even more momentous than the past. We began our centennial celebration with an interactive presentation of historical and scientific exhibits. This was followed by a symposium focusing on the potential impact of biomedical imaging and targeted therapies on improving research, diagnosis, and clinical care in the next century. Leaders from academia and industry discussed the future of personalized medicine and explored the economic cost of these advances.

Glancing back over the last 101 years, we feel immense pride in the premier accomplishments of our Department. These legacies include harnessing the power of the linear accelerator to treat cancer, developing methods leading to the cure of Hodgkin's disease, advancing imaging of the heart and great vessels using cineangiography and a host of recent discoveries in noninvasive imaging using the methods of magnetic resonance and computed tomography.
